Twin Cities RISE!

About Us

Twin Cities RISE! is an anti-poverty organization which offers a unique job training program focusing on long-term training and emphasizing accountability and Personal Empowerment. While our ultimate goal is to end poverty, our objectives also include a market driven approach to job preparation and long-term job retention that is financially sustainable, has a meaningful impact on concentrated poverty, and can influence industry practice and government policy.

Why We Need a New Website

Currently, the following people are NOT routinely directed to our website (out of deeply rooted fears that they might faint or instantaneously burst into tears should they see that our logo is not on our homepage or that an important item is out of date):
• Volunteers
• Donors
• Customer companies (who hire our graduates)
• Potential participants
• Current participants
• Program alumni
• Connecting agencies

Twin Cities RISE! needs to have an eye-catching and memorable website that will draw people in and make it easy to find certain information. We have been trying to accomplish this within the organization with an update of our current site but without a team of people dedicated to the cause, this project tends to find itself moving up and down the priority list.

In addition to making ourselves stand out more to our stakeholders, we also take heart in making the new design of our website benefit our current participants. There would be tremendous value in showing our participants what it is like to navigate a website that is both aesthetically and functionally representative of top “real world” design. Even more value would be added for our participants if our website could contain a special participant resource section that would be used as a tool to help participants get more familiar with the Internet while learning about additional resources that TCR! can offer them.

We also have a referral process through other agencies and want to have our website become a positive portal of information for these agencies that refer new participants to our program. The Twin Cities RISE! website should be representative of the organization itself- enduring, nurturing, passionate, and determined. Right now it’s looking more dreary, confused, and lackluster.

Messages From Supporters

When the judges choose which non-profits will be selected to participate in this year's F1 Challenge they will take into account testimonials from beneficiaries, donors, volunteers, board members and other

Twin Cities RISE! makes great use of its charitable and philanthropic support, and in the process rewards the community. Minnesota as a whole benefits as Twin Cities RISE! graduates become self-sufficient. This organization gets to the root issues of poverty in this community: education and unemployment. TCR! does more than just putting a band-aid on poverty. Instead it goes deeper and breaks the cycle generational poverty for good. With a newly designed website, TCR! would be able to continue to address these problems while keeping supporters, volunteers, participants, and other stakeholders better informed about their valuable work.
Malana Schmidt, TCR! Board Member & Former Greater Twin Cities United Way Vice President
Twin Cities RISE! was the wake up call I needed to turn my dream into a reality. It taught me that I am loveable, valuable, and important. Now that this is instilled in me, I believe in myself as a person. I am someone that can and will succeed in my future. I want more people to know what this organization can do to change lives and more people will be sure to find out with this opportunity to modernize the website.

Twin Cities RISE! changes lives! Not only do they change individuals from the inside out, they have the potential to change the entire landscape of poverty in a community. They accomplish this with a curriculum designed to train and more importantly empower participants so they can earn a living wage and break the cycle of poverty. I believe the biggest challenge TCR faces is getting the word out - to potential participants, to existing/potential donors, and potential/existing customer companies who agree to hire TCR! program graduates. A newly designed website could aid in pulling in more donors to fund this anti-poverty program, keep current donors updated about the successes of participants and upcoming events, organize and motivate volunteers and ultimately be an information tool for customer companies to learn about specific program graduates who are ready to work. Thank you for your consideration of Twin Cities RISE! as the recipient of your OVERN1GHT WEBS1TE CHALLENGE!

Our Mission

The mission of Twin Cities RISE! (TCR!) is to provide employers with skilled workers—primarily men from communities of color in the Twin Cities area—by training under- and unemployed adults for skilled jobs that pay a living wage of at least $20,000 annually.

TCR! is about more than just job training; we’re an anti-poverty organization. We’re about Personal Empowerment and reaching the hardest-to-serve people in the Twin Cities to help them realize a better life.

Personal Empowerment is the backbone of the program. It increases participants’ chances of accomplishing career and life goals by helping them develop belief in themselves and a persevering and positive attitude towards life’s challenges. After going through the program, participants begin to have hope, many for the first time in their lives.

Twin Cities RISE! focuses on reaching the hardest to serve populations by recruiting those people most in need. We have furthered our ability to reach this population through our two newest programs, Awali Place and Awali Inside/Out. Awali Place is a program designed specifically for men leaving incarceration and other men facing severe barriers to employment. Awali Inside/Out is a program for incarcerated men that teaches Personal Empowerment and prepares men for entrance into Awali Place or the Core Program (offering intensive academic and job skills training) when they exit incarceration.
